Who We Are

Architectural Lighting Design is a relatively new profession in India. By definition it involves the lighting of architectural spaces with natural and artificial light with the specific intention of creating a safe, comfortable, emotionally responsive lit environment. A few lighting designers practising within this domain in India felt the need for forming an organization to guide the message of good lighting and professional practice.

To work towards establishing Architectural Lighting Design as a profession of repute in India

To promote the role of the Architectural Lighting Designer in the architectural design process

To foster and develop talent within the community of Architectural Lighting Designers practising in India

To provide a framework for Best Practices for practising lighting designers

To encourage and develop educational programs for Architectural Lighting Design in collaboration with reputed institutes or organizations in India

Charter of Activities

The Core Idea of forming the Association is to make Lighting Design a respected, recognised Professional Practice in India. In order to achieve this goal, the following activities will be promoted

Enhance the knowledge of practising Architectural Lighting Designers through Professional Workshops, Lighting Conferences. There would be periodic zonal workshops & an Annual Conference/Event that would be designed to enhance skills and allow sharing of practice/working issues

Encourage participation and enrolment of practising architectural lighting designers in India in the Association and its activities. It is proposed to have categories that would encourage membership at various levels as per the rules set by the association – Cat 1: Students of lighting design; Cat 2: Associate Member; Cat 3: Professional Member; Cat 4: Nominated Member.

Setting of standards for best practices as an architectural lighting designer including but not limited to prescribed formats for compulsory documentation, compliance for work flow and setting and meeting client expectations.

Engaging with government agencies for recognition of the Profession of Architectural Lighting Designers and mandating the need for appointing a professional from this community for works in the public realm.

Organizing programs at zonal and central levels that invite other design stakeholders to experience the works of practising professionals from this community for projects in and around India.

To work with like-minded educational institutions to develop course and curriculum for preparing competent, creative and conscious future lighting designers.
